How do I ensure sending goods to Kenya doesn’t turn into a horror story?

We’re all familiar with the daunting tales: Shipping products or goods to Kenya, be it Mombasa, Kisumu, or Nairobi, comes with some of the highest shipping costs globally, making it excessively expensive.

We’re all familiar with the daunting tales: Shipping products or goods to Kenya, be it Mombasa, Kisumu, or Nairobi, comes with some of the highest shipping costs globally, making it excessively expensive.

Even if you manage to find a shipper that doesn’t inflate prices, the lingering concern is always, “Will my items actually reach their destination, and if so, when?” This becomes especially crucial when the shipment involves a tangible product rather than just a monetary transaction. Regardless, the consensus remains that shipping costs are exorbitant, and the distribution points often seem to be located in unfavourable parts of town.

Kenya Exports was set-up to deal with exactly that issue, and I am delighted to interview Morris Njuguna,  director at Kenya Exports, Luton.

Welcome Morris, how long have Kenya Exports been shipping from the UK to Kenya?

Thank you, we launched in 2009 and  everyday, hundreds of local and international individuals and businesses use Kenya Exports to send shipments and cargo conveniently, quickly, and securely.

Shipping to Kenya has a bad reputation, how do you overcome these challenges?

“There are challenges, and the big international companies don’t fully understand this as Kenya is such a small percentage of their global business.  Our staff members are experienced in all aspects of shipping household goods and personal effects overseas. From the time your goods are collected to final delivery they will talk you through the international moving process from UK to Kenya. We will provide guidance and advice whenever required to ensure you are informed and relaxed every step of the way. This includes advice of packing or we can even do that for you.

We have clear upfront competitive charges so there are no nasty surprises and offer a true door to door service, collecting from your home or office anywhere in the UK and delivered to your door step in Kenya.” Morris Njuguna

What types of services do you offer?

Morris Njuguna  “We provide a choice of delivery of goods by sea and air, so customers can trade cost against speed plus ship many goods that you would be unable to send by air freight.

By Sea, it will take 6 weeks from the departure date, whereas it will take 5 business days by air. We dispatch every Friday and goods can be collected or delivered in Nairobi the following Wednesday or at the latest Thursday’s following departure or we can provide transport to your door in Kenya.”

How much do you charge?

“We have a clear price list, the rest we charge £2.50 per kilo + £20 handling fee by sea. By Air we charge £5.95 per kilo plus a £20 handling fee. These charges are inclusive of all customs charges. Customers can pay in British Pounds or Kenyan Shillings.” Njuguna
