Raila casts doubt on standing in 2027

Raila Odinga, the leader of Azimio la Umoja and One Kenya Coalition Party, has diminished the likelihood of participating in the 2027 General Election unless significant electoral reforms are implemented. During an interview with Citizen TV on Wednesday, December 27, Raila emphasized the necessity of reforming electoral processes before contemplating future political endeavors, stating that competing without these reforms would be futile.
Raila cautioned against premature campaign activities, asserting that it is too early to focus on the next election, which is four years away. He highlighted the opposition coalition’s lingering concerns about the 2022 presidential election results, underscoring the need to address these issues before the upcoming electoral cycle.
The former prime minister expressed the view that a proper electoral commission, capable of overseeing elections and delivering transparent results, is essential for any candidate contemplating the 2027 elections. He noted that the results of the last presidential elections have not been published according to the law.
Contrary to reports suggesting his endorsement of Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka for the 2027 poll, Raila clarified that he had only acknowledged Kalonzo as a trustworthy individual within Azimio la Umoja. Raila emphasized that the coalition would decide on its 2027 candidate at the appropriate time.
Addressing speculations about his potential exit from politics, Raila asserted that he is not ready to retire and hinted at a possible sixth attempt at the presidential seat in the 2027 General Election. Dismissing claims of quitting, Raila urged his supporters to stand by him, refuting suggestions that Kalonzo Musyoka would be a replacement.
